Locals Only is a event that means so much to so many people. It’s more than just your average skate contest. The skateboarding is extremely passionate and inspiring and brings every age group, male and female, together for one day at one park. This event shows us that the passion that a 7 year old girl has for skateboarding, is comparable to that of a 40 year old man who has dedicated most of his life to it.
The day started out extremely beautiful with high hopes that the brutal Arizona summer heat would be a thing of the past. As the line formed and the skaters skated you could see the excitement in everyone. We started of with the pee wee division and as they pumped and carved it was apparent that these little guys were having fun in the spotlight for their first time! As the youngsters skated and the parents were taking their photos, we weren’t sure who was more excited, the kids or the parents. During the practice sessions between the divisions we raffled off Converse Shoes, Real Decks, Bones Wheels and plenty of other prizes. Moving along to the Masters and Women’s advanced, we started seeing more familiar faces and friends skating. Each year these divisions grow it warms our hearts to see the skateboard demographic grow as well. The young bucks (13 to 15) all skated hard but it was local D West favorite Jojo Alvarado who took home 1st place. In both the 16 and up and the Sponsored/Advanced divisions, we saw some amazing up and comers killing it. In the end it was Brazilian Lucas Alves who hard flip back lipped his way into 1st place. The entire day was so fun and everyone there had an awesome time.
Special thank you to Converse Cons, Real Skateboards, Bones Wheels and the City of Phoenix for helping us to make the entire event happen for the community. Thanks also to everyone who came out to skate or show support, we couldn’t do it without you!
See you at the next one.
