Converse Cons brought us one hell of a weekend!
We kicked things off Friday with the ‘Cons Project’. A DIY curb building workshop with Andy Vasquez, special guests Kenny Anderson and Dolan Stearns. With the guidance of Andy - kids and adults alike built their own mini curbs (perfect tech deck props) before teaming up to build the large ramped curb. It was awesome to see everyone learn and work together. Shout out to Tanner Marvel for feeding everyone and makin’ sure the event ran smoothly.
Saturday was an event we’re all familiar with, the Desert West contest known as ‘Locals Only’ presented by Converse Cons. Every year we’re lucky enough to put on the ‘Locals Only’ contest with the help of our sponsors, every year it just gets better and better. From new faces entering, to the progression of kids that have skated the contest for years - we’re always stoked on the turn out.
DJ Kate Scratch fever kept the tunes goin for every heat. Pizza was served and raffles won. A little something extra this year, all the raffle ticket and t-shirt sale’ proceeds went to benefit the CowtownSkate.org Initiative to build a FREE skate plaza in Central Phoenix. If that wasn’t extra enough for you, Kenny Anderson and Dolan Stearns gave out the prizes for all top three spots throughout the contest! Holla to Meg Lemon for taking some heavy slams and still killing her run. Shout out to Malachi Gray for taking first in the Sponsored/Advanced division. He’s been steady killing’ the contest for years, so it was sick to see him win!
Saturday evening! Converse Cons presents AJJ for the 4th annual ‘Rock the Bus’ benefit. At this point it felt like PHXAM weekend. We all may have been a little tired from baking in the sun all day but that couldn’t stop the party!
Cowtown S.K.A.T.E. non-profit and The Joy Bus Org. worked together to bring us an unforgettable night. DJ NotGoth kicked things off, Sewer Gap kept the crowd going, and AJJ closed out the night. This again was very special because all proceeds from the night went to the Cowtown S.K.A.T.E. initiative to build a free skate plaza in Central Phoenix and also The Joy Bus mission.
“Personally I think it was the best one ever. Not a frown around. High Energy and happiness. Both orgs received funding and it was all good” - Laura Martin.
Huge thanks to Converse Cons, Bones Wheels, Real Skateboards, The Joy Bus, The Pressroom, Andy Vasquez, Kenny Anderson, Dolan Stearns, Tanner Marvel, John Nigrelli, everyone that made these events possible and everyone that made it out to show their support.
